Analyses of “the separation” – Mohammad irfani
“The separation” is about the difficulties of tow young
couples life that enter into each other’s life in pretext of the separation of
Nadir from Simin. Nadir and Simin belong
to the middle class of Tehran city (Nadir is a banker and Simin is a teacher)
who have a normal life with their teenage daughter Terme ...
But a disagreement on going abroad
for pursuing a better life which causes their separation, paves the way for a
low class couple to enter into their life, the women as a worker and the man
linked to her by accident. The labor woman who is pregnant with her small
daughter starts work as a householder. She is a religious woman and fills
uncomfortable with nursing Nadir’s old and infirm father. But due to her
husband’s financial difficulties, she continues her job, even without the
knowing of her husband. The turning point in this story is when the labor woman
forgets about taking care of the ailing old man and he goes outside to by a
newspaper. When she goes after the old man to get him back home, she faces a
car accident and miscarriage.
The next day she ties the ailing man’s hand to his couch, leaves her job and
goes to a doctor. Unfortunately while she is outside, Nadir and his daughter
come home and find the grandfather in a bad condition. When the labor woman
returns home, Nadir rages on her, he calls her irresponsible, accuses her of
stealing money and forces her out of his home. In the next scene, Nadir and
Simin are in hospital while the labor woman faced miscarriage; Nadir goes to the trial in crime of killing a four
year old human.
With the silence of the labor woman about the truth of
the accident, the two men come out to a lawsuit. The labor woman’s husband
tries to condemn Nader and Nader defends himself that he didn’t know about the
pregnancy of the woman and he didn’t force the woman in such a manner that may
have been caused that miscarriage. From his side Nader accuses the woman of
being irresponsible; he accuses the women that her irresponsible action caused
his father losing the ability to speak. In the meantime, Simin who now lives in
her father’s house and pursuing separation is worried about their daughter. Her
action to help out Nader is giving the court a surety for his release and
persuading the squawker to receive some cash in compensation and get rid of
pursuing the case in the court. But when two sides are satisfied with the
compensation, Nader wants the labor woman to swear to Quran that he is the one
who caused the death of her little child. In this moment the woman’s conscience
arises and prevents her to accept the compensation money. This makes her
husband fill dishonor and angry, so he gets the compensation by breaking
Nader’s car window.
In my view the main point of this film is that the two
sides are in such a hurry that nobody can wait for the others to secure
justice. The last scene of the film finishes with the separation of Nader from
Simin and the crying face of Terme who must choose staying with one of her
parents. The only one who is not in hurry in his affairs is Nadir’s ailing
father that even in the last days of his life is interested in reading
newspapers and his appearance is maintained by the others:
Simin doesn’t want her daughter to be grown in the
unpleasant situation of the country. She doesn’t see any fortune to live with
her family in her country. She is in hurry to get his family out of bad
situation and if her husband is an obstacle, she is ready to get rid of him.
She doesn’t have time for listening to terme’s interests and nursing her
husband’s father.
Nader, facing irresponsibility of the labor woman overacts and without any
proof accuses her of robbery. He says he has the right to kick the woman out of
his house. Nader also doesn’t have time to listen to her
daughter’s words and if he does, she is under his moral pressure.
The labor woman wants to help out her husband by working
in other’s house, but she doesn’t have time to tell him. She cannot put her
foot out of the circle her husband drawn for her as a household wife. And
despite being religious, struggling with the difficulties of life, she doesn’t
have the courage and the time for telling the truth to the others. She is in hurry,
because she can’t get to her job in time.
And finally the labor woman’s husband, struggling with
his failures and poverty represents the people of lower class who are always
undermined and nobody listen to them. He is under the pressure of creditors who
have taken every opportunity of moving toward a better live away from him.
It is in such a situation that the ailing old man goes
out to look at the newspapers and causes tragedy.
The dominant atmosphere in this film expresses
the facts and truths about living in a metropolis.
Metropolis presses the time and the place for its citizen .people in
metropolises have to make choices in shortness of time and in a restricted atmosphere.
They have to leave one thing to have another thing.
